Sony has announced that the PS5 exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PC on July 26th. This will be the first time the series has ever been officially available on PC, so it’s a pretty big moment.
The port is being handled by Nixxes Studio with help from Insomniac themselves. That’s good news because Nixxes’s previous ports were of the Spider-Man games and Horizon: New Dawn Complete Edition. While Horizon did have some issues it wasn’t too bad, and both the Spider-Man games were transferred over quite well. Sony could certainly do with pleasing the PC market right now considering the disaster that was the PC port of The Last of Us.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Nixxes provided a little glimpse of what the PC version offers compared to its console counterpart.
What Nixxes didn’t mention was the minimum and recommend specifications needed to run the game. Previously, Insomniac and Sony heavily played up the idea that the game’s rifts, which transported players to other locations, needed the speedy PS5 SSD to work. This sparked a little controversy when other developers pointed out that this isn’t quite true. Using some smart tricks it’s possible to pull off similar effects on much older hardware.
With that said, I fully expect Rift Apart to have an SSD as the minimum requirement. While this does not mean you wouldn’t be able to play it on a regular old HDD, you’d probably have a pretty bad time.
As for the game itself, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a supremely entertaining romp from start to finish with endearing characters, fun gameplay and awesome visuals. I’d wholeheartedly recommend the game, but given Sony’s current track record on PC, I’d advise waiting for some reviews so that you can buy in confidence.
